We are committed to providing the highest level of care to every patient, whether their condition should require routine or complex surgical care
Our practice was founded in 1980 by Dr. Mario Villalba, Sr., who was later joined by Dr. Mark Frikker. These two iconic surgeons trained generations of surgeons in our community, including each of us. They established a foundation of commitment to surgical excellence with sharp focus on attention to detail – details of surgical technique and patient care. These exceptional surgeons earned wide respect for their skill in caring for patients with the most challenging of surgical conditions.
In addition to running a busy surgical practice, Dr. Villalba served as medical director of the surgical intensive care unit for most of his career. He and Dr. Frikker (who now serves as Beaumont Royal Oak’s Chief of Surgical Services) challenged each of us, after successful completion of rigorous general surgery training, to pursue subspecialty fellowship training in the nation’s premier academic institutions
As physicians, we embrace a sacred duty to our patients. Hippocrates, considered the father of medicine, wrote the classic physician’s oath that was pledged by physicians for thousands of years. A modern version of this oath, the Declaration of Geneva, embodies our promise to you.
AS A MEMBER OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION:
I SOLEMNLY PLEDGE to dedicate my life to the service of humanity;
THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF MY PATIENT will be my first consideration;
I WILL RESPECT the autonomy and dignity of my patient;
I WILL MAINTAIN the utmost respect for human life;
I WILL NOT PERMIT considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;
I WILL RESPECT the secrets that are confided in me, even after the patient has died;
I WILL PRACTISE my profession with conscience and dignity and in accordance with good medical practice;
I WILL FOSTER the honour and noble traditions of the medical profession;
I WILL GIVE to my teachers, colleagues, and students the respect and gratitude that is their due;
I WILL SHARE my medical knowledge for the benefit of the patient and the advancement of healthcare;
I WILL ATTEND TO my own health, well-being, and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard;
I WILL NOT USE my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat;
I MAKE THESE PROMISES solemnly, freely, and upon my honour.
We partner with you to ensure that you are prepared for your visit and, if indicated, for your surgery.
With this ambitious vision, we have been able to import and cultivate best practices in surgical care from diverse leading centers of surgical excellence.
Hernias of the abdominal wall are openings, or holes, in the muscular and fascial layers of the abdominal wall. Protruding bowel through a defect commonly creates a bulge.
Symptoms related to the presence of stones in the gallbladder are a common indication for gallbladder surgery.
Optimal treatment of these conditions involves complex surgery and coordinated multidisciplinary care.
Melanoma. In this procedure, the skin (including the melanoma) is removed in very thin layers.
We have been on the forefront of this field which combines emergency surgery, trauma surgery, and critical care.
We place catheters for cancer chemotherapy, feeding tube access, and peritoneal dialysis access.
We remain committed to providing the highest level of care to every patient, whether their condition should require routine or complex surgical care.
“I met Dr. Barnes and team by a huge stroke of luck when I was brought to the emergency room on the 4th of July for a surprise gallbladder operation.What initially was very nerve-wracking not having had the time to prepare or research a doctor, you cannot imagine how thrilled I was to learn that I could not have handpicked a better surgeon!. I was lucky as heck that God chose the best for me! Sparing you readers the sordid details, all I can say is I was extremely blessed to have Dr. Barnes and team perform my surgery. Textbook PERFECT from initial diagnosis to recovery. I almost wish I had another gallbladder for him to remove! As unfun as my holiday turned out to be, I could not have been more fortunate than to be assigned to Dr. Barnes and team.He's a caring, extremely skilled surgeon with a terrific bedside manner.They took top notch care of me and I was in skilled hands all the way through.The residents are all amazing - learning well from Dr. Barnes. Rockstars!! Love these guys!”
“Could not have had a better experience & outcome, regarding surgery, after surgery care & follow up appointment, Dr. Robbins & the rest of his team seem to care about the patients health & well being more than most other doctors I've been to. He does not look @ patients as a #, as in $ wise, getting you in & out of his office like most other doctors do/ as quick as possible. Would highly recommend to anybody for Hernia surgery or anything else in the fields he is trained.”
“There aren’t enough words to describe the positive, love, and care Dr. Mangla has given my husband during his 1 year hospital stay with hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis. My husband ended up having every complication under the kitchen sink and some associated with this disease. Nothing anyone could have prevented, it’s the nature of the disease. Dr. Manglas experience and skills, intuitive care, and genius creative skills… has kept him alive having almost died several times. From day one he told us he would be there every step of the way and he was. We were a team and he communicated regularly during the most difficult of Covid times. It was an emotional roller coaster and he was there every step of the way. The mantra from day one was: were in it to win it, and slow and steady wins the race. Husband is home and we see Dr. Mangla in the office for routine visits which is nice instead of ICU or OR! Thank you Dr. Mangla!”
“Dr. Robbins is a top-notch surgeon and wonderful human being. To make a very long story short, he saved my father's life 10 years ago when asked by another medical specialist to step in after a poorly executed surgery. This man is everything you want in a surgeon... amazing delivery of information and calming presence that every family would hope for when faced with surgery. Fast-forward 10 years, Dr. Robbins has performed subsequent family surgeries with the same professionalism / approach.”
“Dr Ivascu and her team saved my mom's life. She is caring and down to earth. What could have been the worst time in our lives- she gave us hope while also being very honest. I could never express in words what she has done for my family. Thank You Dr Ivascu!”
